Skip the miradouros at sunset when everyone else has the same idea, and go at 7am instead. The city is quieter, the light is better, and the trams aren't full.

Alfama rewards getting lost more than following a map. Narrow streets open onto small squares with a single café, usually with better coffee than anywhere with a queue.

For dinner, look past the restaurants with English menus taped to the window. The ones without a menu displayed outside are usually the ones locals actually eat at.
