A Short History of the Wristwatch

Wristwatches were originally considered impractical, even feminine, by early twentieth century standards; pocket watches were the serious choice.

That changed largely because of soldiers in the first World War, who needed both hands free and time synchronized to the second.

A century later, the watch survives mostly as a design object rather than a necessity, which may be why the mechanical ones never really went away.
